BYCN

The growing urgency of the climate crisis is inescapable and yet global leaders continue to drag their feet in terms of taking the kind of dramatic action needed to ensure a livable future. As storms, fires, droughts, heat, and other extreme weather events become more common and widespread, we receive nearly daily reminders of the urgency of the crisis and the need for solutions that are big enough to make a genuine difference.

The Bangladesh Youth Climate Network (BYCN) is a youth-led organization that aims to promote climate action in Bangladesh and other countries. BYCN works with universities in Bangladesh and in collaboration with universities in other countries such as Bhutan and Nepal.

The goal of BYCN is to empower young people (mostly university students) to raise their voices about the urgency of the climate crisis and the need for real solutions. BYCN seeks to counter the false messages spread by the fossil fuel industry and its allies that it is simply enough to throw your trash in the dustbin or plant a few trees in order to “save the earth.” BYCN sees the impact that corporate activity has on our planet and our future and seeks corporate controls rather than subsidies.

BYCN also seeks to gain attention to the reality of climate (in)justice, whereby the countries currently suffering the most from the climate crisis are not those contributing the most to creating the crisis.

BYCN aspires to be an active member of the strong, vibrant, and diverse international movement led by youth to take the climate crisis seriously, to wean ourselves off of fossil fuels, and to seek genuinely sustainable ways of living rather than the false and dangerous goal of “sustainable development.”
