Urban Gardening
Urban gardening can help reduce many of the problems otherwise faced by urban dwellers. Urban gardening contributes to making our cities greener; looking at greenery in turn improves our physical and mental health. Green roofs make our buildings cooler. When we grow food in our cities, we gain access to fresh, healthy, nutritional fruits and vegetables, all while resisting corporate control of our food supply.
Working in gardens is beneficial to physical and mental health. There is nothing so magical as the sensation of bringing life into the world: planting a seed, then nurturing the plant that results. For some people, urban gardening results in significant quantities of affordable, safe food; for others it is an important form of livelihood. But even if we just grow a few plants, we contribute to making our cities greener and healthier for all. Growing food in the city also reminds us where our food comes from—and that we do not need to rely on major corporations simply to eat.
The IWB building includes a compost pile and a rooftop garden growing a variety of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Visitors are warmly welcome to visit our rooftop and contemplate how they can contribute to a greener, healthier city.
