Do Home Makers Have Value?
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total monetary or market value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country in a specific time period. As a broad measure of overall domestic production, it functions as a comprehensive scorecard of a given country’s economic health. GDP includes goods and services within a country. GDP does not include(a), the goods produced outside the country (b)sales of used goods (c)illegal sales,(d)transfer payments by the government (e) intermediate good that are used to produced final good,(f) the work of a home maker.
Why a home maker’s contribution won’t be calculated in GDP? If we analyse the contribution of a home maker, we can see that without a home maker the house just becomes a standstill. People won’t be able to eat, won’t be able to stay healthy as a home maker takes care of them. If they don’t take care then the whole economy won’t be able to run.
But the whole society is not ready to give them proper respect. I think this is a wrong perception. Just think if we don’t have any home maker or housewife we then need to appoint someone to take care of the household and this will cost at least 10000tk per month. So, our home makers are saving 10,000 tk in every month by giving their time and labour. Then why their contribution won’t be calculated in GDP? I think they deserve the highest respect and dignity in our society and their contribution must be included in GDP.
